Bone cut off the lieutenant as half a dozen enemy SRM rockets exploded in a fireworks display across his Wolverine's chest. "Hmm, I think in this case with the volume of fire we're laying down range it might be prudent to only f-" "I've got solid tone on both racks? Do I fire?" "Roger that sergeant," Tag acknowledged as both of his Trebuchet's LRM missile target sensors locked on to the fleeing HQ vehicle. "Bone" Instein in his Wolverine escorting "Tag" in the Trebuchet support mech. Now his arrival stiffened the Wasp pilot's nerve as the lance began to focus on the mission at hand. Legless and unable to adapt to cybernetic replacements, his Wolverine had to be specially modified to accommodate his battle wounds. "Bone" Instein was a veteran of decades of mech combat. Instein's voice had snapped scores of mechwarriors to attention over the years. "Quit yer bellyachin'," a familiar voice drawled over the comms, "The cavalry is here." Cresting the rise to the west the remainder of the battle lance stomped into visual range. "Man, why couldn't they have sent a Phoenix Hawk to do this? My Wasp aint cut out for this sort of thing!" Taking on a full lance of light mechs was more than Cpl. Rather than risking further damage to the mech, the mercenaries' main battle lance was given the green light to suit up and race to the theater of operations instead.įearing the Wasp was a diversionary tactic, the bulk of the Lyran defenders fell into a tight escort formation, but freeing a pair of more heavily armed Commando scouts to fall back to pounce on any other threat that might appear from the west. Disappointingly, his recon lance was still nursing a Locust with a shattered gyro. Weighing his options Captain Razor decided to proceed with the mission. A mercenary lance would simply need to reach the HQ vehicle, pick it up and make a hasty getaway back to base. If the Lyrans recovered any sort of communication cyphers or equipment they'd be loaded in an "HQ" transport vehicle. If they acted quickly, a different lance could be dispatched from the mercenaries' hidden base to intercept them. The Lyrans had dispatched a small force to the battlefield and were sifting through the rubble in search for something. It would be challenging and risky, but offered a hefty reward in intel.Īs Captain Razor lead his battered but victorious lance back to base he received a communication from their aerospace allies who spotted unusual enemy activity. They have downsides, and require tactical considerations. After our straightforward last battle, I decided to offer my son a different type of recon mission. Or dropping from an AC10 to a UAC5 can be an improvement if you are willing to spread that damage around a bit more.īasically, UACs are great, and in many cases they are an improvement over ACs, but they are not straight upgrades. Now, if you have a build with 2 AC10s, and you want to drop that to a UAC10, that's an improvement with the understanding that you reduce your tactical capabilities slightly (no splitting fire, less heat management, etc). Upgrading from an AC10 to a UAC10 requires making some serious sacrifices that may not be possible for what you get out of it. The UAC10 is 15 tons, 4 tons of ammo for the same engagement capability, and 8 tons of sinks to stay neutral for a grand total of 27 tons and 15 slots. So an AC10 is 14 tons base, lets say 2 tons of ammo for 16 rounds, and 4 tons of heat sinks to stay neutral for a grand total of 20 tons and 9 slots. On top of that, they do kick up a lot of recoil which makes them difficult to use for rookie pilots (and since guts tends to be the least valuable skill, even my heavily experienced pilots tend to not do so great with them in extended engagements) An AC10 produces 12 heat, a UAC10 produces 24 heat. So you typically end up doubling your ammo supply. A UAC10 with 1 ton of ammo can only last 4 rounds of combat. An AC10 with 1 ton of ammo can last 8 rounds of combat. They fire 2 shots, which means they burn ammo like crazy. UACs are great, but it's not like there isn't a downside to them.
